Tamil Collection

Many of the Society’s Sinhalese and Tamil manuscripts were presented by Sir Alexander Johnston (1775-1849), one of the founders of the Society, who frequently gave books and other objects relating to Sri Lanka. His donations included manuscripts, maps, charts, and coloured drawings illustrating Sinhalese Buddhism and demonology. Most of the Sinhalese and Tamil manuscripts are on palm leaf.
